Vancouver’s Belcarra Technologies has released new USB drivers that will allow Windows Mobile and WinCE peripherals to network using Ethernet  with standard host platforms through USB ports.

The company has implemented the peripheral-end industry standard Ethernet Control Model (CDC-ECM) called the USBLAN-FN that will work with existing CDC-on Windows CE and Windows Mobile and interface with all major host operating systems including:

• All windows operating systems
• Most versions of Linux
• Mac OS/X

What this means is that any device running windows mobile or Win CE can use this new driver to act as an Ethernet network device when attached to the host’s USB port. The solution is standardized across all host operating platforms.

According to Bruce Balden, President of Belcarra, “Belcarra’s USBLAN product line is an established and proven complementary suite of CDC-ECM products for Windows desktop and embedded operating systems, with seamless auto-configuration functionality. The addition of USBLAN-FN allows Windows-based hand helds to network across the USB link with all standard host operating systems using a single standard USB configuration, and in particular offer tethering service, to host machines using the standard CDC-ECM protocol”

Conclusion

It’s about time that someone realized the need for an easy way to network all of the gadgets we use. I don’t just mean sync them up with our laptop or desktop, but actually network them. I will definitely download this new driver and give it a try.
